In Memory of Jill Sobel Messick

JILL SOBEL MESSICK was a successful film executive and producer for many years having spent over a decade as a studio executive with Paramount and Miramax before working most recently as an independent producer.

Her most recent film project is the upcoming Warner Bros production of MINECRAFT starring Steve Carell which she is producing with Roy Lee. She also Executive Produced the NBC comedy series BAD JUDGE.

At Paramount-based Lorne Michaels Productions, Jill started in the fall of 2003 rising to President of Development and Production. Her first project for Lorne Michaels Productions was developing the hit comedy “Mean Girls.” Messick served as an Executive Producer on the Tina Fey adaptation of Rosalind Wiseman’s best-selling non-fiction book Queen Bees & Wanna Bees that went on to become a pop culture phenomenom. While working for Lorne Michaels, Jill also executive produced the Andy Samberg comedy HOT ROD for Paramount and the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy BABY MAMA for Universal.

Prior to running Lorne Michaels’company, Messick was a production executive at Miramax Films for five years (1997-2003), rising to the rank of Senior Vice-President of Production responsible for all aspects of West Coast feature film development activities.

Messick’s first project for Miramax, on which she also served as co-executive producer, was the hit comedy “She’s All That”. This teen comedy, starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Rachael Leigh Cook and Paul Walker, was one of the most profitable films for the studio that year. Messick went on to supervise and executive-produce several films for Miramax

Messick’s final and most prestigious project at Miramax was the Academy Award®-winning “Frida,” directed by Julie Taymor. Nominated for six Academy Awards and taking home two Oscars, the critically acclaimed film starred Salma Hayek in the title role and Alfred Molina as Diego Rivera.

A native of California, Messick graduated from the USC with a B.A. in communications. She began her career in the entertainment industry as the Director of Development for Woods Entertainment, where she championed Kevin Williamson’s spec script “Scream,” which went on to become one of the defining pop culture films of the 90s. She also was responsible for championing then-newcomer M. Night Shyamalan’s script “Wide Awake,” Shyamalan’s U.S. feature directorial debut.
